What am I?
I am considered an aquatic mammal – that means I am warm-blooded like you. I am related to whales and porpoises and I am very intelligent. I am dark gray on my back and light gray on my stomach. I can be as small as four feet long and can grow as big as thirty feet long.
Where do I live?
Because I am warm-blooded, I can be found in almost all areas of the oceans. About the only place you won’t find me is in the Arctic and the Antarctic. I live in family groups called pods with up to 12 other dolphins. Pods will sometimes join together to form one pod with 100’s of dolphins.
What do I eat?
I eat small fish including shrimp, crabs, and squid. I will sometimes throw the fish up into the air and try to catch it in my mouth…like you might do with popcorn.
How long do I live?
Female/girl dolphins live to be about 40 years old, while male/boy dolphins only live to be about 30 years old. I breathe through a blow hole in the top of my body. I can dive deep, but I have to come up for air every 5-8 minutes.
