I’m called a Sea Otter. I am an aquatic warm-blooded animal because I am a mammal. My length from my head to my tail is as long as 2 to 5 feet and I weigh up to 99 pounds.
Where do I live?
I live in the Pacific Ocean. You can find me in the waters near southern California or near the coastal shores of Hawaii. I also live on the shores of Alaska.
What do I eat?
I like to eat clams, mussels, urchins, crabs and abalone. I have a really big appetite. I am the only aquatic mammal that uses tools to eat my food. What I do is place a stone on my chest and smash the shell against the stone to break it open so I can eat my prey.
How long do I live?
My mother gives birth to me in the water. She rolls over in the water with one spin then out I come from beneath her tail as a small wet pup. She holds me up in the water with her teeth. As a little infant sea otter, I only weigh about 3 to 5 pounds. I live as long as 23 years old.
The brown color on the map shows where Sea Otters are found.
